It was a culmination of the Assam Accord signed in 1985 after the six-year long Assam agitation, for detection, disenfranchisement and deportation of foreigners. It has alleged that lakhs of “illegal migrants” have been included in the register while genuine citizens have been excluded. The BJP Government in Assam has rejected the NRC in its current form and demanded a reverification. Those excluded will get an opportunity to present their case before Foreigners Tribunals.
